Would you like to improve your photography skills while working with a professional photographer in one of the most spectacular locations in the world? Then our 1-day photo workshop in Vermilion Cliffs NM is for you! Elias Butler has spent years exploring and photographing the Southwest. A regular contributor to Arizona Highways magazine, Elias brings a wealth of knowledge about traditional film and the latest digital techniques to each workshop while guiding you to his favorite locations. You’ll experience famous wonders such as the colorful Coyote Buttes or the surreal White Pocket while Elias shares advice on composition, lighting, and how to get the best results from your camera. He will show you how to capture the brilliant colors with your own unique vision, not simply by copying what others have done. We’ll begin by scouting our location during the afternoon hours and then target the best possibilities for capturing the landscape during the “magic hour” of light that precedes sunset. When the light is perfect, you’ll be ready! Our goal is to help you make the best images possible and to give you the tools and tips to improve your technique and vision. This workshop is open to photographers of all skill levels. Whether you own a cell phone camera or a 4x5 film camera, don’t miss the chance to get great shots and have fun doing it! Following the workshop, you’ll be invited to share your favorite images with Elias so that he can critique your work. Customer must obtain $6 BLM permit in advance. Price per person $499.

Overnight Photography Workshop

Making great photographs takes time! To give you the best chance of making a truly iconic image of the beautiful Coyote Buttes or White Pocket, we offer a special overnight photography workshop that will give you both a sunset and sunrise to take advantage of the flattering light that occurs at the day’s edges. What’s more, we’ll also continue the workshop when the sun goes down! In the past few years, digital cameras have been available which can capture the stars and moonlight with great detail and quality. If you own a DSLR camera and want to photograph this amazing landscape at night, this is a fantastic and rare opportunity! Professional photographer Elias Butler, a regular contributor to Arizona Highways, will lead you to his favorite spots in this land of geological wonders while sharing his knowledge of techniques, composition, and lighting. With personal, one-on-one instruction, Elias offers the chance to learn and grow while in the greatest classroom in the world. Prepare to push your limits and expand your horizons! We provide meals and everything necessary to comfortably spend a night under the stars. You’ll be in perfect position to photograph the fleeting light of both sunrise and sunset when the colors will be at their most brilliant. Please bring a tripod and plenty of memory cards (or film) along with your camera kit. Following the workshop, you’ll be invited to share your favorite images with Elias so that he can critique your work. Customer must obtain $6 BLM permit in advance.
