This tour requires a much shorter hike than the North tour and is considerably more varied from a photographer’s point of view. This is a BLM permit area and attracts fewer visitors due to difficult roads. Special vehicles are required to visit this area, and our guides have the experience you will need. The southern section of Coyote Buttes South has two areas: Paw Hole and Cottonwood. They both feature the giant “teepees” photographers love to shoot. Each is very different from the other. Paw Hole displays more of the deep red iron oxide sandstone than other areas inside the Monument. Offering several delicate and colorful walls, this is an excellent choice for anyone interested in sweeping vistas and fine detail. Lace rock is another great discovery in this section and is showcased in many coffee table books of the area. Cottonwood is another 45 minutes to an hour past Paw Hole. It has a more prominent orange and yellow cast to it. We suggest choosing one area for your tour, as they are both exceptional destinations and should not be rushed. If you are more interested in hiking than photography, it is possible to see quite a large area in Coyote Buttes South. Photographers have consistently rated this section more highly than the Coyote Buttes North area due to the sheer volume of subjects to shoot.
Fruit and bottled water are provided.
